Bernie Sanders

A dream is a wish your heart makes….

If you follow us on social media or are friends with us online or in real life, you will know that politics are VERY important to us. But that hasn’t always been the case. I am 37 years old and I have voted in every election since I was 18 because I knew it was my civic duty, but I didn’t always care. Seth, on the other hand, didn’t vote because he didn’t think there were any good choices anyway. The truth is that we are white, straight, middle class people and weren’t affected too much either way. Then came Bernie….

We were both getting older, we had kids, we were starting to see a world that we didn’t like for our children. We were starting to pay attention but when Bernie came out of the woodwork, it was a game changer for both of us. He motivated us, not to necessarily fall in line 100% with his policies, but more to speak truth and to see what was actually happening. His passion and straightforwardness made us both come alive. We wanted to be a part of the change he was suggesting for our country. We started getting involved and supporting candidates and showing up for causes. We started researching information instead of just sharing articles that inflamed the other side or only agreed with our side.

Bernie changed our life. Not because of policies he made, but because he made us see that policies MATTER. And they especially matter even when they don’t specifically affect my life. They matter because they can help or hurt our neighbors, friends, or even people we don’t know. I fully believe that we need to care about each other & take care of each other because it all comes back around full circle.

So when Seth got the opportunity to photograph Bernie at an Iowa rally, he jumped at the chance. We had been gone the day before from a wedding and yet, he still got up at 4am to drive out to Iowa. What an amazing experience and we hope to have many more working with candidates in whom we believe.

So let me say this as well, we are pretty progressive liberals, but I think we all need to learn how to talk to each other about politics. There is the old joke about not talking politics around the table but I think in growing up avoiding it, we have forgotten how to discuss it. We need to learn to listen to each other again. We need to learn to discuss the issues. I like sitting down with my relatives and friends who are conservatives and discussing gun reform or school funding. I like hearing their ideas and asking questions. And I think we need to get to a place once again where we can talk and listen instead of name calling and emotional outbursts. {I’m still learning to do that but I am working on it. :) }

So anyway, all that to say, we hope to move into doing more photography work like this. If you are someone into politics or know someone running for office who needs photos, please get us in touch. We would love to find some candidates and provide this for them. It was really fun to get to watch Bernie and JD interact with people and fun to catch some behind the scenes action. Mostly, it is great to watch good people serve the public and if there are any out there in our circle of influence, we would love to meet you and work with you!

Now let’s work together to get this country on the right track FOR EVERYONE. :)

I’ll leave you with this quote I share every year on my birthday, “ Hello babies. Welcome to Earth. It’s hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It’s round and wet and crowded. On the outside, babies, you’ve got a hundred years here. There only one rule that I know of, babies, -‘God damn it, you’ve got to be kind.’” -Kurt Vonnegut
